Sun Grinding is celebrating one quarter of a century this year! The company, renown for its quick turn extremely high precision grinding, is proud to announce that it now adds ‘ISO 9001:2015’ to its list of credentials.
Scott Higginbotham purchased the company in 2007, right in the midst of our major economic downturn. He used the next few years to learn the business and hone its processes, with the goal of retaining customers with superior quality and customer service.
“In the last decade, we’ve taken many steps to facilitate our growth”, Scott says. “We’ve invested heavily into new equipment that today affords our customers nearly every type of grinding, including OD, ID, Centerless, Blanchard, Double-Disc, and Surface (CNC Jig Grinding planned for early this year). We also just introduced Pinch/Peel grinding capabilities with our Rollomatic ShapeSmart ® NP50. It is a 5-axis Precision Cylindrical Pinch/Peel grinding machine with integrated 3-axis robot loader and grinding diameter range from 0.025 – 25 mm (.001”– 1”). It is ideal for cutting tool blank preparation as well as punch and mold applications requiring complex geometry and high length-to-diameter ratios.” To support their growth and new equipment, the company also expanded from its 7,500 square foot facility to a 12,000 square foot facility.
Though Sun Grinding’s 800+ customers weren’t specifically requiring the company to be ISO certified, Scott viewed this as a necessary next step as the company is growing their customer base with companies that value the ISO certification, most notably Tier 1 aerospace and medical companies.
Three years ago, Scott interviewed a few ISO consultants, and in his words, “Bretta Kelly, owner of BMSC, stood out.” The company didn’t make the decision to get started immediately. When Scott attended a seminar presented by Bretta for Emerging Leaders of the ATMA (Arizona Tooling and Machining Association) last year, he determined it was time to certify the company utilizing BMSC’s services. Scott sits on the board of the ATMA today, and he says he asked around at the association about members’ experience with BMSC. “She came so highly regarded we made the decision to contract with her last year.”
Both Scott and long-term Sun Grinding employee Jon Dolinich agree the experience with BMSC’s Bretta Kelly and her colleague Debbie Hart was outstanding. Scott elaborates, “They were so professional and knowledgeable. When we first contracted with them, they came in, interviewed the team, and their approach was to tailor our system around what we were already doing.”
From start to finish, Sun Grinding successfully certified to ISO 9001: 2015 in less than 4 months. Scott says, “The ISO experience was significantly easier than we expected, and we can say this is thanks to the help from BMSC. They effectively laid the groundwork that simplified the entire process.”
At Sun Grinding, Scott says that every team member participated in the certification process, and it has resulted in a stronger, more cohesive team. “Our employees have a better understanding of how their work impacts the final customer products; of how a standard is applied to everything we do.” He adds, “It will also make for an easier learning curve as we bring on new employees.” An added bonus to the entire certification process and the strong commitment to the success of the company from all employees has meant that Scott has been able to remove himself from the day to day production process; enabling him to spend more time on building the business through networking, sales initiatives and strategic / business planning.
